Manjari Sharma

Manjari Sharma (b 1979) is a photographer born and raised in Mumbai, India and based in Brooklyn, New York. Rooted in the study of relationships and personal mythology, since it’s inception Manjari’s work has been recognized as walking the line of fine art and traditional portraiture.

Manjari believes that the artist’s vulnerability and experience of culture shock can often transform a banal journey into an adventure, and is constantly seeking out new contexts and stories to commit to film. She has shot extensively in the US and India, exploring the mythologies and the people that inhabit these lands. Through the medium of body language and emotion, her work captures the human need to communicate whether it be with the land, water or another human being.

In the past few years Manjari ‘s work has been showcased in several group and solo exhibitions both in the US and internationally. Most recently, her works were exhibited in the Critical Mass show ‘Across the Divide’ which was juried by Todd Hido and Espacio Nudage curated by José Luis Callejo and Gloria Rueda. Nudage is an International group exposition in Spain for which Manjari was short listed as one of ten international photographers. Manjari has had solo shows of her work “Paani” at the Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles in 2011, and also with Richard Levy Gallery in Alburqurque, NM in Fall 2010. Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney, Gallery 339 in Philadelphia, The Photographic Centre North West in Seattle, Kris Graves Projects in Brooklyn and the Center for Fine Art Photography in Colorado have also featured her work in group shows. Manjari has been invited to speak about her work at the School of Visual arts and the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City.

Chosen as the Critical mass top 50 in 2010, Manjari has been featured in various magazines and praised by photography critics. She was selected as a featured photographer for the cover of PDNedu spring issue 2010; she received ASMP best of show in 2010, and eight honorable mentions at the IPA Lucie awards. She was recognized as a winner for the NYC Strand photo contest, judged by Lesley Martin of Aperture and Darren Ching of PDN. In addition, Manjari’s images were selected by John Paul Caponigro for a show in Colorado and her work has received press from Nikon Asia, NPR, Time Magazine Lightbox, Life magazine blog, The Morning News, Burn Magazine, The Sunday Guardian, Times of India, 1000 Words Magazine, Deep Sleep magazine, Slideluck Potshow, PDN Photo of The Day Blog, Flak Photo, Fraction Magazine, Exposure Compensation, The Photography Post, Nymphoto, Leica, and Lenscratch, among many others.

Before moving to the U.S. in 2001 Manjari worked for the national news daily of her country, The Times of India. Manjari has also worked as a staff photojournalist with the leading south asian photography magazine, Better Photography. She holds a bachelors degree in Visual Communication from S.N.D.T University, Mumbai and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Still Photography from Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio.
